Volunteer: Volunteer Tutor

  What makes a good tutor?

If you can speak, read and write well in English, and want to share those skills, you can be an effective tutor. You don't need an education degree, prior experience, or knowledge of another language — just a desire to help others and a willingness to be trained. Tutoring works best when it is informal, personalized, and fun.

If you have training in an occupation or profession you'd like to share, even better! Many of our adult students hope to pursue a career, and our volunteer tutors can help them on their journey via Bridgeway to a Better Life, our adult skills program.

How to become a volunteer

To become a tutor, you must attend a one-hour orientation and two 90-minute sessions of training, depending on which program you choose — English Language (ELL) or Adult Skills (AS). Classes and tutoring are offered online or in person.

English Language classes are focused on improving reading, writing, and spoken English. Adults Skills classes are focused on higher level skills such as teacher or healthcare prep classes or our GED prep classes.

We ask you to volunteer to teach at least once a week on average. This involves approximately 30 minutes of preparation for each class. Some tutors volunteer for more than one class.

We value tutors that commit to an extended period of volunteer service with Lincoln Literacy, and we want to ensure their success and personal fulfillment. Because of this, we provide four hours of training as well as ongoing support to all tutors as part of their volunteer service to Lincoln Literacy.

Our tutor Chet said, "Tutoring was one of the best parts of my year. It gives me purpose and my students always brighten my day."

Types of Tutoring One-to-One Tutoring

(English Language & Adult Skills)

Tutor and one student meet individually

once a week for one hour.

Class duration : 1 hour

Number of students: 1

Small Group Class

(English Language & Adult Skills)

A tutor meets with a small class group online or in person. Classes are based on students' skill level, including beginning, intermediate, and advanced.

Students are placed at the levels according to the results of the initial English language fluency test.

Tutors are also welcome to teach skills classes such as Math Literacy, Computer Literacy, GED Prep and others.

Class duration: 1 - 1.5 hours

Number of students in class:  3 – 8.

CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of abused, neglected, truant and ungovernable children and youth in Juvenile Court. CASA volunteers are asked to commit to serving for one year and must complete 30 hours of pre-service training before being assigned to a child/children. CASA volunteers are assigned to a Volunteer Coordinator who works with them and can help them navigate the often chaotic child welfare system. CASA volunteers are asked to provide 3 references and must pass a local, state and national criminal background check along with child/adult abuse registry check. Volunteer: Food distribution - perishables

Perishable food program

Our valued community partner, the Food Bank of Lincoln, delivers between 3,000 and 15,000 pounds of food every Monday and Wednesday morning for distribution. This includes a wide variety of items such as vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meat, pastries, bread, beverages, canned goods, breakfast items, and other miscellaneous products. Your assistance is greatly appreciated in sorting the food items and placing them appropriately on tables, shelves, or in refrigerators. Once all food has been organized, your assistance would be invaluable in distributing it to families and individuals in need.

Following the distribution, your help would be appreciated in cleaning up, taking the trash outdoors, and recycling cardboard boxes.

The hours of volunteering vary from 8 am until 12 pm, or until all food has been distributed.

We extend a warm welcome to all who are interested in participating in this meaningful initiative.

Volunteer: Donation organization and distribution

The Good Neighbor Community Center accepts gently used items for distribution to families in need. Volunteers play a vital role in the collection, sorting, and distribution of these donated items.

Responsibilities: Collection of Donations from Donors: Donors may bring their donations to the center's dock, located at the rear of the building at 2617 Y Street. Volunteers will accept the donations and assist donors who require help lifting items from their vehicles to the raised door deck. Donation Receipts: After receiving donated items, volunteers will provide donors with receipts for tax purposes. Sorting of Donations: Volunteers will sort through all donations, typically contained in bags, and categorize them for efficient distribution. We request that donated items be in reasonably good condition. GNCC values the dignity of those receiving donations, and items that cannot be distributed are recycled or discarded. Clothing is sorted based on gender and age and placed in designated barrels in the sorting room. Shoes are also sorted into separate barrels, awaiting placement on shelves in the shopping area. Other household items, such as kitchen utensils, cooking pots, bedding, small appliances, and personal hygiene items, are accepted for distribution at GNCC. Due to limited space on the shopping floor, furniture, mattresses, and large appliances cannot be accepted. Shopping Floor: Once donations have been sorted, volunteers assist in placing them on the shopping floor, where families in need may select items at no cost. Volunteers assist families in recording the items they have received, allowing the center to track the number of items distributed. As families select items from the shopping floor, volunteers replenish the items from the sorted and waiting inventory in the sorting room. Groups: Small and large groups are welcome to participate in sorting donations. Lincoln is a generous community, and there are ample items available for groups or individual volunteers of any size. Duration: We recommend that volunteers commit to at least one hour of assistance when visiting the center. Volunteers may stay as long as the center remains open. This helps to prevent pet homelessness by reducing unwanted litters. LAA also maintains a need-based pet food bank, helping pets stay in homes when their human's life get tough. LAA promotes enrichment of our community through progressive thinking, education, awareness, and public support. We are committed to addressing the root causes of animal homelessness in our community. Volunteer: Volunteer Board Treasurer Wanted – Help Us Balance the Books (and Eat Cookies)

The Brain Injury Association of Nebraska (BIA-NE) is on the hunt for a detail-loving, budget-balancing, mission-driven individual to serve as our Volunteer Board Treasurer. If you enjoy a good spreadsheet, believe in community impact, and appreciate a perfectly baked cookie—keep reading.

Who Is The Brain Injury Association of Nebraska?

We’re Nebraska’s only statewide nonprofit solely focused on brain injury support. BIA-NE helps survivors and their families navigate life after brain injury through resource facilitation, peer mentoring, education, and advocacy. And we do it all with compassion, creativity, and a little hustle.

Our mission is simple but powerful: To create a better future for all Nebraskans affected by brain injury.

We’re a small but mighty team that values collaboration, common sense, and showing up with heart. Our board reflects that energy - and we’d love to bring someone on who shares it. And we believe kindness, transparency, and snacks make every board meeting better!

What You’ll Do (besides eat cookies!):

Provide financial oversight to support mission-driven decisions

Review monthly financial reports (we promise they’re not scary)

Partner with staff to develop budgets and financial policies

Lead the finance committee and advise the board on nonprofit best practices

Translate financials into plain English for fellow board members

Keep an eye out for trends, red flags, and ways to strengthen our impact

What We’re Looking For:

Background in accounting, finance, or budgeting (CPA not required, but we’ll still be impressed)

Experience with nonprofit financials or QuickBooks is a plus

Able to commit 2–3 hours per month

Someone who’s thoughtful, thorough, and not afraid to ask “Wait—why are we doing it that way?”

Appreciation for homemade cookies (the Executive Director bakes… it’s kind of her thing!)

Learn More About the Role

If you’re curious or ready to raise your hand, email Peggy Reisher, Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska, at peggy@biane.org. We’d love to hear from you—and maybe save you a cookie.
