The Good Neighbor Community Center accepts gently used items for distribution to families in need. Volunteers play a vital role in the collection, sorting, and distribution of these donated items.
Responsibilities:
Collection of Donations from Donors:
- Donors may bring their donations to the center's dock, located at the rear of the building at 2617 Y Street.
- Volunteers will accept the donations and assist donors who require help lifting items from their vehicles to the raised door deck.
Donation Receipts:
- After receiving donated items, volunteers will provide donors with receipts for tax purposes.
Sorting of Donations:
- Volunteers will sort through all donations, typically contained in bags, and categorize them for efficient distribution.
- We request that donated items be in reasonably good condition.
- GNCC values the dignity of those receiving donations, and items that cannot be distributed are recycled or discarded.
- Clothing is sorted based on gender and age and placed in designated barrels in the sorting room.
- Shoes are also sorted into separate barrels, awaiting placement on shelves in the shopping area.
- Other household items, such as kitchen utensils, cooking pots, bedding, small appliances, and personal hygiene items, are accepted for distribution at GNCC.
- Due to limited space on the shopping floor, furniture, mattresses, and large appliances cannot be accepted.
Shopping Floor:
- Once donations have been sorted, volunteers assist in placing them on the shopping floor, where families in need may select items at no cost.
- Volunteers assist families in recording the items they have received, allowing the center to track the number of items distributed.
- As families select items from the shopping floor, volunteers replenish the items from the sorted and waiting inventory in the sorting room.
Groups:
- Small and large groups are welcome to participate in sorting donations.
- Lincoln is a generous community, and there are ample items available for groups or individual volunteers of any size.
Duration:
- We recommend that volunteers commit to at least one hour of assistance when visiting the center.
- Volunteers may stay as long as the center remains open.
- Operating Hours:
- Mondays - Thursdays: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
- Fridays: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
